Elixir Radar Newsletter Issue #506

This issue is brought to you by Groxio ...

After tomorrow, the annual plan goes back to $350. Last chance to lock in $228/year.

One subscription covers OTP, LiveView, Ecto, LiveBook, Nerves, AI Agents. Project-based, built for developers already shipping in production.

LiveView refresh lands Q2 and is included when it drops.

Articles

Chad shows how to replace bloated context modules full of bespoke query functions with EctoShorts, a library that lets you describe queries as data maps. He also covers composable query fragments for complex joins and automatic caching with SchemaCache.

Pieter Claerhout ran into a subtle race condition: his LiveView dashboard job counter was always off by one because the count refresh was triggered from inside the Oban worker, before the job state was committed. He shows how Oban's telemetry events solved it cleanly.

Lars Wikman shows how to inject Erlang tracing into a running system using hot code loading. He updated his Entrace library and created a one-liner to download and load pre-compiled .beam files at runtime. He also introduces entrace_opentelemetry, which uses Erlang tracing to generate OpenTelemetry spans on the fly.

Elixir for Finance book - Sponsor

I've been working with Alex and Dimitrios Koutmos on a book that teaches financial markets through Elixir code. The goal: understand how markets work and have the tools to analyze your own portfolio and investments. Join the waitlist to learn more.

Expert just hit v0.1.0, its first stable release after the release candidate cycle. Mitchell Hanberg shares the milestone and what's next, with v0.2.0 already being tracked on GitHub.

Jitesh implemented Amazon's Dynamo, the distributed key-value store, in Elixir. The implementation covers consistent hashing, vector clocks, quorum replication, gossip protocols, and more. As expected, BEAM is a natural fit for this kind of system.

Videos

There are many tools to mock in Elixir. Which should we use? German Velasco evaluates Mox, Hammox, Mimic, Repatch, and others on async testing, cross-process mock sharing, ergonomics, and contract enforcement.
